Kaliza Karuretwa is Director General in charge of Investment Climate and Intellectual Property at the Ministry of Trade and Industry in Rwanda.
A lawyer by training, she specialises in legal and regulatory reforms and public policy issues related to private sector development, public-private dialogue and investment promotion.
She has worked as a diplomat at the Rwandan Embassy in the Washington where she was in charge of the Commercial department, promoting Rwandan exports to the US, tourism and investment opportunities in her country. In this capacity she successfully developed a market for Rwandan products including handicrafts, tea and coffee in the US. During that time, she also was instrumental in the negotiations and signing of investment agreements between the US and Rwanda (BIT and TIFA).
Her most exciting achievement was her role in developing sustainable access to the US market for the AGASEKE beautiful baskets made by rural women of Rwanda.
She also organized high level Investment forums in major US cities to showcase opportunities in Rwanda and has been a guest speaker at various conferences.
She holds a Masters degree in Law (LLM) from the London School of Economics (UK) and a Bachelor degree in Law from the National University of Rwanda.
